It is extraordinary just how many people go on a cruise and then get hooked forever.
I decided to find out some of the main reasons and spoke to Sue Robinson who has taken her holiday this way for the last 6 years.
Why did you first choose a cruise?
We wanted something that would be suitable for my elderly mother, my youngest daughter, my husband and myself. Some friends recommended cruising and frankly we haven’t looked back
What do you like most about it
It is all so easy and means a completely worry-free experience of an exceptionally high standard in everything including the food. It is always well organised from the time our cases appear in the cabin. Frankly we don’t have to feel concerned about anything. For us too it involves no flying, as all but one of the P & O trips we have been on have set sail from Southampton. The exception was last year when went on part of a world cruise, just my husband and myself, flying to Australia and eventually flying directly home from Hong Kong
How do you keep up with different energy levels of your family?
Nowadays, our usual routine when we reach a port is that we all go and explore for the morning and take my mother back for lunch and then go off again. So she gets a feel of a place. It seems to really work. In the evenings my daughter can go to discos, my mother to concerts and my husband and I have time to ourselves.
Where did you go first?
It all began on our first trip, which was going to the Canary Islands and Madeira. Since then we have been to the Baltic, The Adriatic, and the Med as well as our trip last year much further afield.
Have you ever been on a Speciality Cruise?
Our Adriatic cruise had a classical music option on board and there were concerts and opera performances. Again the standard was just so high.
What are some of the best times you have had on board?
I’ll never forget sailing into Venice, it was almost possible to reach out, right into St Mark’s Square. It was absolutely magical. Then there was last year when we left Sydney Harbour, which was all lit up and looked, so dramatic and stunning. Also in Nagasaki when we left, there was a Japanese school band playing, waving and singing us out.
What have you got planned for the future?
We are off the Baltic again in a few weeks time and after that…. we shall see.
