Wishing you all a very happy Cruiser’s Day

Wishing you all a very happy Cruiser’s Day

We have Mother’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Groundhog Day and even Darren Day. But as far as I can see, there’s no Cruiser’s Day.

So let me declare today that day. It seems amazing this hasn’t been done before. Astonishing no one has thought to celebrate the huge contribution we cruisers make to the world. What contribution, I hear you ask? Well, prepare to be enlightened.

Perhaps you think being a cruiser is just about hitching a ride on a ship, sailing to a few places where you can’t buy Marmite and then heading home.

That’s certainly one way to describe what we do, but there’s much more to us than that.

Major force

In today’s troubled world we cruisers are a major force for good. As a cruiser you can feel proud that your actions are helping to make this planet a better place.

If you’re the modest sort, you may feel that all you’d done was go on holiday. If there’s any credit due you may think it should go to the cruise operators, their fleets and their crews.

Well you couldn’t be more wrong. The truth is this great industry’s contribution to life on Earth has only been made possible by you. Without you, there is no cruising.

Job opportunities

Let’s consider the facts.

Fact. Your enthusiasm for travel has created job opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people.

Fact. Your desire to explore distant lands is helping to bring wealth to less wealthy nations.

Fact. Your thirst for adventure is drawing people together from every corner of the globe, regardless of race, culture or creed. And in the process it’s helping human beings gain greater respect for each other.

Bottles not battles

You and your fellow cruisers are members of a noble tribe. One that chooses shopping over shooting, conversation over confrontation and bottles (bought from duty free) over battles.

You are the modern knights of the round table, spreading joy and happiness wherever you go. But while King Arthur’s gallant followers went round righting wrongs, you prefer writing postcards.

You are like the conquistadores of old, venturing across giant oceans to set foot in remote kingdoms. But where those ancient warriors had cutlasses and swords, you come armed with enthusiasm and good humour, not to mention credit cards and iPads.

Wild west

You are like the frontiersmen and women of the wild west, except that sometimes you also head east. And where those early pioneers had their wagons and stagecoaches, you have your trolley suitcases.

You are truly amazing. Where there is ignorance, you bring a desire to understand. Where there is stuffiness, you bring fun and laughter.

And where there’s a souvenir to be snapped up, you bring the readies.

Titans

Make no mistake, you are a race apart, the demigods and demigoddesses of the decks.

You are the wizards of the waves, the Titans of tourism, the viceroys of vacationing.

You, my friends, are the nephews and nieces of Neptune, the natural heirs to Drake, Cook and Columbus.

Superstars

In short, you are the superstars of the sea. And I wish you – and all who sail with you – a very happy Cruiser’s Day.

Excuse me now, while I go lie down in a darkened room.
