On my last cruise, everywhere I looked I seemed to be surrounded by elegant extremely well dressed Italian ladies.
I needed to know how they achieved their effortless understated chic? After all not many women book up a holiday, any holiday, without thinking what to wear?
This is often followed by a desperate dash to the shops to make sure all contingencies are catered for; a smart dinner, a visit to a port, or sunbathing by the pool.
On top of that heat, cold, fashion, comfort, and price, one or, more must always be brought into the equation… Some people are so good at shopping that every second looking for clothes is a perfect pleasure. They feel it is a wonderful use of their time (that seems to include most people from Italy).
Sadly I just don’t. I agonise, then sadly remember for the hundredth time that my last trip to the gym was just a distant memory and generally get totally hot and bothered until finally walking out the shop, empty handed and in despair, only to have to return when in a better mood.
To cap it all, in my mind, nothing is worse then when a well-meaning shop assistant interferes, or worse still, totally ignores, the agony I am going through. I also get upset about just how much time has been wasted, to no avail at all and more often than not sheepishly return to my classic favourites sitting on the hangers’ back home. Or else stare at the genealogy site on the Internet that tells me the unsurprising fact that I have absolutely no Italian blood running through my veins.
So how do they do it, these so well co-ordinated and elegant travel companions? Is it a genuine all consuming interest, a national culture or an inborn talent? Should I after all just leave it to those countries that provide so many real experts? Perhaps it is better to be content with surreptitiously picking up just a few salient fashion hints on my next trip on the high seas.
After all too much worrying may cause some lines on my, I guess, forever to be Botex-free forehead, and just where would that get me then?
