In October when the days gets horrider, some Brits are longing for Florider.
As are a lot of Americans, who like to summer in the winter.
In Florida they brag that they have 365 days a year (‘and 366, in each leap year…’). And that’s a conservative estimate.
If you don’t have time to sail across the Atlantic for the Florida sun from the UK, you can fly direct to Orlando and pick up a cruise from Port Canaveral.
But there’s so much to do in Orlando, which is a great port of call in its own right, you should try and spend a few days there, pre- or post-cruise, to give your holiday an added fillip.
Talking of which, my wife says it’s about time we took a sea cruise. We need the towels.
I think she must be descended from Noah. Whenever we go on anywhere, she takes two of everything (just joking, milady!! Besides, there’s only one of me).
I told her if she carries on like this I’ll take my next cruise alone. And if I register as an unmarried plastic surgeon, what fun I could have…
Or I could just let what’s left of my grey hair down in Orlando, which is best known for the Walt DisneyWorld and the Universal Orlando Resorts (the latter of which consists of two parks, Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure), as well as many other attractions.
The most visited American city in 2009, Orlando attracts around 47 million tourists a year, 3.3 million of them from outside the USA.
I doubt that Kenneth Graham, author of The Wind in the Willows, ever went there for it was before his time but he did once say, ‘The best part of a holiday is perhaps not so much as resting yourself, as to see other fellows busy working.’
Apart from watching the thousands of tourism industry workers who have turned this area of Florida into a huge global theme parks attraction, I recommend spending time with the dedicated men and women at Cape Canaveral Kennedy Space Centre who will soon be monitoring brief cruises into space.
One day, perhaps, we’ll see aliens beaming down to Florida for a bit of R&R after a long intergalactic cruise.
