Five myths that might stop you having a great holiday

Five myths that might stop you having a great holiday

Last year my Dad was arrested – unfairly in my opinion – for walking down the street dressed like a duvet.

Needless to say when the case came to court there was only one way he could plead.

Not quilty.

OK I admit it, that’s a terrible joke. Now let me tell you one that’s even worse.

Mistaken ideas

Every year thousands of people avoid going on a cruise because they swallow one or more of the myths of cruising.

Can you imagine that? All those people being influenced by so many mistaken ideas and consequently missing out on one of life’s great experiences.

Without any further ado let’s try and explode a few of these misconceptions.

Myth 1

Ships are slow. You won’t go far in two weeks

Actually, it turns out you can go much further and pack more in than a lot of people might imagine.

Many modern cruises are designed for those of us who only have a small window of time to spare. Most itineraries are in regions where the next port is reachable in the time it takes you to get a good night’s sleep. For example Mediterranean cruises, Caribbean cruises, Baltic cruises, Far East cruises, Canada & New England cruises and Emirates cruises all have very complete itineraries.

Ex-UK departures are as popular as ever and will get you to the Med or Baltic’s in no time all. If you don’t want your holiday to start or end in Britain, you can opt a fly cruise so your cruise holiday starts as soon as possible.

Myth 2

Cruising sounds a bit too formal and stuffy

In today’s customer-led market nothing could be further from the truth. Even so-called formal cruises can be very relaxing and enjoyable experiences, and far from stuffy.

However, if you’re looking for a holiday with a truly chilled out atmosphere and absolutely no standing on ceremony, then it’s time you took a closer look at casual cruises.

With so many possibilities on offer there’s every chance you’ll find a package to satisfy your schedule and personality profile.

Myth 3

It’s too expensive

Most people who buy into this theory are generally not comparing like with like.

A key point to remember is that your cruise package will include the cost of food, accommodation and travel. And of course there’s no extra charge for all those special moments and changes of scenery that few other holidays can match but which are standard on any cruise.

What’s more, in an increasingly competitive marketplace there are some amazing bargains to be found. It might be challenging for the cruise operators, but it means there’s every chance you can find yourself some great cruise deals.

Myth 4

I’ll get seasick

Modern cruise ships, especially the bigger ones, have largely addressed this problem by fitting stabilisers to the hull. These help to reduce much of the ship’s rocking motion which is the main cause of seasickness.

Some people are prone to motion sickness and sea voyages can sometimes trigger such a feeling. The good news is this shouldn’t keep you from cruising because there are practical steps you can take to minimise the risks such as asking your pharmacist for a suitable over-the-counter remedy.

If you are keen to take up cruising, but are unsure how your body will respond, you might want try a test run by signing up for a taster cruise.

These generally last between two and four days and can be the ideal way to introduce first-timers to the pleasures of life aboard a cruise ship.

Myth 5

There’s too much sitting around

If you want to spend your time lying back and soaking up the vitamin D from sunlight, there’s nothing to stop you doing that on a cruise. For lots of people that can be the perfect way to escape from the cares of a busy working life.

But with so many other possibilities to indulge in there’s no reason why you have to opt for a sedentary holiday.

Today’s cruises are packed with activity from the moment your voyage begins to the final disembarkation.

Firstly, there’s the ship’s gym to ensure you stay fit and toned throughout the trip. Then, of course, there are all those onboard sporting activities to get the adrenaline pumping and the red and white corpuscles whooshing through your arteries.

But it doesn’t stop there. Every time you dock there’s plenty of scope for being active. This can range from sightseeing and retail therapy, to a variety of more physically demanding excursions.

To find the holiday with the right level of physical activity for your requirements, just speak to the Virgin cruise specialists on 0871 226 8130.

Whatever happens don’t let any of these myths make you miss out on what can be a truly life-enriching experience.
